Hilvan lies north of Şanlıurfa in southeastern Turkey, on the broad upland of the Upper Mesopotamian plain. From above the town is a tight cluster of streets inside a much larger field of cultivated land. Plots, field boundaries and farm tracks cover far more of the map than the town does, and that sets the scale of the whole composition.
Like many district towns in the region, Hilvan is arranged around a few main roads that meet near the centre, with residential blocks filling the space between them.
