Hinnøya is the largest island along the Norwegian coast, leaving Svalbard aside, and it straddles the boundary between Nordland and Troms. Its outline is anything but compact: deep fjords reach far into the interior from every side, dividing it into peninsulas and mountain blocks. Harstad, the island's largest town, lies on its northeastern side along the Vågsfjorden.
