Hisar sits on the flat plain of western Haryana, where irrigation canals turn dry land into fields. The city was founded in the fourteenth century by Firuz Shah Tughlaq, and remains of his fortified palace survive in the old town. On the map, the dense older core sits among newer sectors with planned streets, and canals curve around the city's edges.
Hisar is known for its education and agriculture, with the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University occupying a large campus of fields, buildings and roads. The city is also a regional centre for livestock research. These large institutional areas are clearly visible on the map, adding open space between the residential sectors.
