Holland spreads across flat land at the eastern end of Lake Macatawa, a long inland lake connected to Lake Michigan by a short channel. On a map the city is an orderly grid of numbered streets and avenues, with downtown centred on Eighth Street. To the west, the lake and the dune-lined shore give the design a strong edge of water.
The city was founded in 1847 by Dutch settlers led by Albertus van Raalte, and that heritage remains visible. Tulip Time, held each May, fills the streets with flowers, and Windmill Island Gardens is home to De Zwaan, an authentic Dutch windmill. Hope College occupies several blocks close to downtown, adding a campus pattern to the grid.
