Houilles is in Yvelines, west of Paris, inside one of the large loops the Seine makes on its way downstream. The town is almost entirely built up. Houses, small apartment blocks and gardens fill a fairly regular grid of streets, and it grew from a village into a commuter suburb after the railway arrived.
The railway line crosses the town and has a station shared with neighbouring Carrières-sur-Seine, which provides fast connections to Paris and La Défense. On the map, the tracks form a firm diagonal through the grid. The river itself is just beyond the town's borders, and its curves appear at the edges of a wider frame.
