Huinong is a district of Shizuishan in the far north of Ningxia. It occupies a narrow strip of land between the Helan Mountains to the west and the Yellow River to the east. From above, its streets form a disciplined grid of long, straight avenues and large blocks. The layout is typical of a town built up around industry and planned from the ground up rather than grown slowly.
The area developed around coal mining and heavy industry, which drew on the resources of the Helan range. Railways and highways pass through the district on their way along the river toward Inner Mongolia. Around the town, irrigated farmland fed by Yellow River water contrasts sharply with the arid slopes and desert that surround it.
