Ibb lies in the central highlands of Yemen, in one of the wettest and greenest parts of the Arabian Peninsula. The region's mountains are covered with agricultural terraces, and the city occupies a ridge and the slopes below it, with the landscape of cultivated hillsides pressing in from every side.
The old town holds the higher ground, a tight cluster of stone houses and narrow lanes that follows the shape of the hill. Below and around it, newer neighbourhoods spread across the lower slopes and valley floor, organised along the main roads that link Ibb with Sana'a to the north and Taiz to the south.
