Illescas lies on the flat plain of La Sagra, roughly halfway between Madrid and Toledo, along the A-42 motorway. The map shows two very different parts. At the centre is the old town, with irregular streets around the parish church and its Mudéjar brick tower. Around it lie broad new residential districts and large industrial and logistics parks.
The town is known for the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad, which holds a group of paintings by El Greco commissioned for the church, one of the few places where his work can still be seen in the setting it was made for. The Mudéjar tower of Santa María is the town's main landmark.
