Imi-n-Tanout lies in Marrakesh-Safi, southwest of Marrakesh, where the plains meet the western foothills of the High Atlas. The town grew along the old route over the mountains toward Agadir, and that road is still the clearest line on the map, running through the centre.
Houses and streets cluster along and behind the main road, with a market area and administrative quarter in the core. Around the town the ground rises toward the mountains in the south, and dry riverbeds and farmland shape the edges. It is largely a Tashelhit-speaking area, serving the surrounding villages.

Around the main road the streets tighten into a compact centre of short lanes and small blocks, the busiest part of a town that serves a wide rural area.
