Inajá lies in the sertão of Pernambuco, in the semi-arid interior of north-eastern Brazil. On a map, the town is a compact grid of streets around a central square, with roads leading out across dry, open countryside. The surrounding landscape of caatinga, the thorny scrubland typical of the region, fills most of the frame and gives the town a sharply defined outline.
Life in Inajá is shaped by the dry climate, with long periods of little rain and a short wet season that briefly turns the scrub green. Goat and cattle raising and small-scale farming are central to the local economy. Part of the Serra Negra biological reserve, one of the oldest protected areas in Brazil, lies in the surrounding area, preserving humid forest on a mountain rising above the caatinga.
