Insēno lies in the Central Ethiopia Regional State, in the highlands south-west of Addis Ababa. From above, it is a modest town that has grown along its main road. Side streets branch off to either side and gradually become footpaths and farm tracks at the edges.
The land here is farmed highland country, with small fields, scattered homesteads and eucalyptus groves spread across gently rolling ground. Towns like Insēno act as market centres for the surrounding villages. This shows on the map as a denser cluster of streets where the rural paths meet the road.
