Itapetinga lies in the southwest of Bahia, in a region of rolling pasture between the coast and the dry interior. On the map, the town forms a compact area of streets on either side of a river, with the land around it almost entirely open grassland.
The centre follows a fairly regular grid, as in many Brazilian interior towns, with a few main avenues cutting across it. Newer neighbourhoods have spread up the gentle slopes on each side, and roads leave the town toward the coast and the neighbouring municipalities.
