Itaquitinga lies in the northern Zona da Mata of Pernambuco, the coastal hinterland long devoted to sugarcane. On a map the town is a compact cluster of streets set among gentle hills, surrounded by wide cultivated land. The Zona da Mata takes its name from the Atlantic Forest that once covered it, most of which gave way to plantations over the centuries.
