Ithaca lies just east of Cephalonia in the Ionian Sea, across a narrow channel. On a map it looks like two islands joined together, a northern half and a southern half, almost divided by the Gulf of Molos, which cuts deep into the east coast. The two halves are linked by a narrow, hilly isthmus near Mount Aetos, crossed by a single road.
Vathy, the main town, sits at the end of a long, sheltered inlet off the Gulf of Molos, one of the most enclosed natural harbours in Greece. Its houses line the curve of the bay, and a small islet sits in the middle of the water.
