Ixmiquilpan lies in the Mezquital Valley of Hidalgo, a dry landscape north of Mexico City and the heart of the region's Otomí, or Hñähñu, community. On a map the town has a compact colonial core, and newer neighbourhoods and roads spread out toward the surrounding farmland and hills.
The town is known for the sixteenth-century Augustinian convent of San Miguel Arcángel, whose church murals mix European and Indigenous imagery.
