Jackson lies on the west bank of the Pearl River in central Mississippi. On the map, the river winds along the eastern edge of the city through a wooded floodplain, and the compact downtown grid sits on higher ground nearby. As the state capital, Jackson is home to the Mississippi State Capitol and several universities, including Jackson State.
