Janakkala is a municipality in Kanta-Häme in southern Finland, just south of Hämeenlinna. It is not a single town but a rural area with several centres, the largest being Turenki. On a map it reads as scattered clusters of streets connected by roads through forest and farmland, with lakes of all sizes pressed into the landscape.
The main north–south routes between Helsinki and Hämeenlinna pass through the area, bringing highway and railway lines that cut long straight strokes across an otherwise organic pattern. The Tervakoski locality is known internationally for its paper mill, which has a long history of making security and banknote paper.
