Janaúba lies in the semi-arid north of Minas Gerais, in the valley of the Gorutuba River. The region's natural landscape is dry scrub, but irrigation has changed large parts of it. On a map, the town's regular grid of streets is surrounded by the geometric patchwork of cultivated land, crossed by canals and rural roads.
The area is known as one of Brazil's important banana-growing regions, supported by irrigation projects that draw on the local rivers and reservoirs. The town itself is organised and straightforward.
