Jaú lies in the centre of São Paulo state, in a landscape of low hills and farmland. On the map, the city appears as a fairly compact grid of streets. Main avenues follow the valleys, and fields and plantations spread out in all directions beyond the edges.
The city grew wealthy during the coffee era, and some of its historic buildings date from that time. Today Jaú is known throughout Brazil as a centre of women's shoe manufacturing, with many small factories and shops concentrated in the city.
