Jinjiang is the seat of Chengmai County in the north of Hainan Island, west of the provincial capital Haikou. From above it shows the pattern of a Chinese county town in transition: an older, denser centre with narrower streets, and broad new avenues and large development blocks extending outward.
The surrounding land is agricultural, with fields, plantations and villages spread across the low terrain of northern Hainan. Roads link the town to Haikou and to the other settlements of the county, and the expansion of the provincial capital has brought new growth to the area.
