Jiuchao lies in the southeast of Guizhou province, a region of steep hills, forested slopes and narrow valleys. On the map, the town occupies a patch of flatter ground within this folded terrain, its streets arranged in a compact form bounded by rising land on several sides.
Roads follow the valley, bending around spurs of hillside, and small tracks lead up toward farms and villages. The surrounding slopes break into many irregular shapes, and fields fill the lower ground wherever the land flattens out.
