Juegang is the seat of Rudong County, north of Nantong in Jiangsu, on the low coastal plain that faces the Yellow Sea. From above, the town has a regular layout, with straight streets crossed by canals and waterways that are part of an old drainage and irrigation system. The land around it is almost completely flat, divided into long rectangular fields.
Much of this coast was once tidal flats and salt pans, and it has been gradually reclaimed over centuries. That history is written into the map: dikes, channels and field boundaries run in long parallel lines towards the sea. The coastal wetlands of this region are also important stopover points for migratory birds.
