Juneau is the capital of Alaska, and its map explains why it can only be reached by sea or air. The city stretches in a thin line along Gastineau Channel, with steep mountains rising directly behind downtown and Douglas Island facing it across the water. No road connects Juneau to the rest of the North American highway network.
Downtown occupies a small, steep patch of ground beneath Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts, where short streets climb the slopes in tight switchbacks. To the northwest, roads follow the shoreline toward the Mendenhall Valley and the airport, and the Mendenhall Glacier descends toward a lake at the valley's head. The city grew from gold mining in the 1880s.

Downtown on the slope
The historic centre is squeezed between the water and steep mountainsides. Its short streets and stairways form a compact, dense cluster at the foot of Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts.
Mendenhall Valley
Northwest of downtown, the valley holds most of Juneau's residential streets. At its head the Mendenhall Glacier reaches toward a lake, a rare glacier within reach of a city's roads.
