Kalachinsk lies east of Omsk in western Siberia, on the Om River, a tributary of the Irtysh. The land around it is almost completely flat, part of the wide forest-steppe of the West Siberian Plain. The town has a mostly regular layout, with long straight streets crossing at right angles and low houses and apartment blocks set within them.
The railway from Omsk to the east passes through the town, and its line cuts straight across the map. The Om loops alongside in slow meanders, with oxbow lakes and wetlands along its floodplain. Beyond the town, fields and birch groves stretch to the horizon.
