Kananga, known as Luluabourg until the early 1970s, is the capital of Kasai-Central province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its map shows a city spread out across a plateau, with a more regular colonial-era centre surrounded by extensive neighbourhoods that follow the gentle rise and fall of the land.
The railway line that crosses the region passes through Kananga, and it helped shape the city's growth. Around it, roads branch outward into residential areas, where the streets become less regular.
