Karīmganj sits in the Barak Valley of southern Assam, on the bank of the Kushiyara River, which here forms the international border with Bangladesh. The map makes that edge unmistakable: the town's streets end at a broad, winding river, and across it lies another country. Few places show a border as plainly as a line of water drawn against a street grid.
The Longai River also passes near the town before joining the wider river system, and the low, wet landscape around Karīmganj is full of ponds, channels and paddy fields.
