Kasserine stands on the high plains of west-central Tunisia, where the steppe meets the mountains of the Tunisian Dorsal. Its name is usually explained as 'the two castles', a reference to Roman mausoleums that still stand near the town. On the map a straight colonial-era grid forms the core, while newer neighbourhoods spread outward along the main roads across dry, open land.
On the edge of town lie the remains of Cillium, a Roman city whose triumphal arch and tall mausoleum of the Flavii survive among the ruins. Nearby rises Jebel Chambi, the highest mountain in Tunisia and the centre of a national park. The Kasserine Pass, a short distance to the north-west, was the site of a well-known Second World War battle in 1943.

Cillium ruins
Just outside the modern centre, the Roman site of Cillium keeps its triumphal arch and a tall mausoleum. Here the street grid gives way to an open archaeological zone.
Jebel Chambi
Tunisia's highest mountain rises close to town. Its slopes and national park form the rugged backdrop to the plain on which Kasserine is built.
