Kataysk is a small town in Kurgan Oblast, in the Trans-Ural region of Russia, on the Iset River. The land here is flat and open, and the streets run in long, mostly straight lines. They divide the town into broad rectangular blocks of low houses with gardens. From above the pattern is orderly but spacious, with plenty of room between buildings and few tall structures.
The Iset adds the map's one irregular element as it curves past the town in loose loops. A railway line crosses the area, and roads lead out across fields and patches of birch woodland toward neighbouring villages. It is a landscape of wide horizons.
