Kātrās is a town in Dhanbad district, Jharkhand, in the heart of India's main coal-mining belt near the Jharia coalfield. From above, the landscape is broken and irregular: a dense town centre, railway lines, collieries and spoil areas all sit side by side, with small settlements scattered between them.
The street pattern follows this industrial setting. The bazaar area is packed and irregular, and roads bend around mining land rather than running in straight lines. Railway sidings used for moving coal cut across the map, and patches of open or disturbed ground appear where workings have changed the surface over the decades.
