Kaukauna lies on the Lower Fox River in northeastern Wisconsin, between Appleton and Green Bay. The river runs through the middle of the city from southwest to northeast. On the map it splits the town into two halves joined by several bridges. Residential streets on each bank are set out in a largely rectilinear pattern, which bends where it meets the water.
The name comes from a word for a portage around rapids at this point. Engineers later tamed the drop with a series of navigation locks and a canal along the river. For a long time Kaukauna has been an industrial town, and paper mills and hydroelectric works have used the river's power. Traces of the canal and locks still show clearly on the map.

A historic canal with navigation locks runs beside the river where it once dropped over rapids. Its straight line stands out against the natural curve of the Fox.
