Kax lies in the Ili region of northwestern Xinjiang, in the valley of the Kax River, one of the main rivers that feeds the Ili. Mountain ranges of the Tian Shan rise on both sides. From above, the town lies along the valley floor, with farmland and river channels stretching east and west between steep slopes.
The river shapes the map. It often splits into several braided channels across a wide floodplain, and the town's streets form a regular pattern beside it. Roads follow the valley, because the mountains leave few other routes. In monochrome, the smooth valley floor, the busy town and the dense relief of the slopes become three clear textures.
The Ili valley is known for its grasslands, orchards and mountain pastures, which differ from the deserts found elsewhere in Xinjiang. A Kax map poster shows one part of that greener landscape.
