Kelaniya lies just northeast of Colombo, on the far bank of the Kelani River, and the river shapes its map. It loops through the area in broad meanders, with low marshy ground along its banks, while the town's roads branch off the main routes leading out of the capital.
The town is best known for the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, one of the most revered Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, which tradition links to a visit by the Buddha. Each year it hosts the Duruthu Perahera procession. Kelaniya is also home to the University of Kelaniya, whose campus forms a distinct block on the map.
