Keningau lies in the interior of Sabah, on the island of Borneo, on a broad plain enclosed by mountains. The town centre is a compact grid of shophouse blocks and main roads. Around it, residential areas and farmland stretch across the flat valley floor. The Crocker Range rises to the west and separates the interior from the coast.
On the map the contrast between plain and mountain is striking. Roads spread easily across the valley but narrow into a few winding routes where they meet the hills. Rivers and streams cross the plain, and their curves stand out against the straight lines of plantations and fields.
