Khambhāt sits at the head of the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat, on the estuary of the Mahi and Sabarmati rivers. For centuries it was a major port, known to foreign traders as Cambay. As the gulf silted up, sea trade moved elsewhere, and today the town faces broad mudflats and tidal channels.
The old town is a dense maze of narrow lanes, pols and temple compounds, packed tightly against the shore. Khambhāt is also known for agate working, a craft with a very long history here. The gulf has some of the strongest tides in the region.
