Khānāpur is a town in Belagavi district, in northwestern Karnataka, not far from the border with Goa. It lies on the Malaprabha River, which curves past the town on the map. Streets gather around the older market area and spread out along the main roads. To the west and south the land rises into the forested hills of the Western Ghats.
The town is a stop on the railway between Belagavi and Londa, so a long straight track runs across an otherwise irregular street pattern. Roads leave Khānāpur toward Belagavi, Goa and the forest villages, and together the railway and highways form a clear framework around the town.
