Kharian lies in Gujrat District in northern Punjab, on the historic Grand Trunk Road between Gujrat and Jhelum. The town itself is compact, with an older bazaar area of close lanes. Its map, though, is dominated by the neighbouring cantonment, one of the largest military stations in Pakistan. The cantonment's orderly roads and open grounds cover a wide area beside the town.
The land around Kharian is mostly flat and farmed. To the north-west it rises toward the low, eroded ridges of the Pabbi Hills, known for their fossil beds. The main railway line from Lahore to Rawalpindi also passes through. It runs roughly parallel to the Grand Trunk Road and strengthens the town's long north-west axis.

Cantonment grid
Beside the town, the cantonment is laid out with wide, regular roads and open grounds. This planned pattern contrasts sharply with the older bazaar streets.

Toward the north-west, the low, broken ridges of the Pabbi Hills begin to rise from the plain. They give the edge of the poster a more rugged texture.
