Khlong Yai is in Trat, Thailand's easternmost province, and its geography is unusual. The district occupies a thin strip of land between the Gulf of Thailand and the mountains along the Cambodian border, and in places it is among the narrowest parts of the country, only a few hundred metres wide. The town sits on the coast, where a river mouth and mangrove channels break up the shoreline.
