Khmilnyk lies in the Vinnytsia region of west-central Ukraine, on the Southern Bug river in the historic land of Podillia. From above, the water shapes the plan: the river bends and widens around the town, forming islands, ponds and a long green shoreline, while the streets of the older centre gather on the higher ground nearby and newer districts spread beyond them.
The town is best known as a spa resort. Its radon-rich mineral waters have long drawn visitors for treatment, and sanatoriums set in wooded parkland occupy much of the riverside.
