Kigoma lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in far western Tanzania, near the borders with Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. From above, the town curves around a sheltered bay on the lake. The port, the railway station and the commercial streets sit close to the water, and residential areas climb the hills behind.
Kigoma is the western terminus of the Central Railway, which runs across the country from Dar es Salaam, and its port connects to other towns around the lake. Nearby Ujiji is where Henry Morton Stanley found David Livingstone in 1871. Gombe Stream National Park, famous for Jane Goodall's chimpanzee research, lies a short way up the shore.
