Kirishi sits on the Volkhov River in the east of Leningrad Oblast, where the river runs north toward Lake Ladoga through flat, forested country. From above, the town reads as a single planning idea: broad avenues, regular residential blocks with courtyards, and generous green gaps between them, all set beside the steady line of the water.
The fighting of the Second World War left almost nothing of the old settlement. The front line held along the Volkhov for many months, and the area became known as the Kirishi bridgehead. The town that stands today was built largely from the 1960s onward, which is why its plan feels so unified compared with older Russian towns that grew street by street.

Rebuilt as a new town in the Soviet era, Kirishi has regular microdistricts with inner courtyards and wide streets, which print as a clean, rhythmic pattern rather than a tangle.
