Kishangarh stands in central Rajasthan between Ajmer and Jaipur, on dry, open land broken by low rocky hills. From above, the town divides into distinct parts: an older settlement near the lake and the former palace, and a large commercial spread of marble yards, warehouses and workshops along the highway. The main roads are wide and purposeful, built for trucks carrying stone across the country.
The town is one of India's biggest marble trading centres, and its stone market draws buyers from far beyond Rajasthan. Its artistic legacy is equally significant: the Kishangarh school of miniature painting produced the celebrated Bani Thani, a portrait known for its elongated eyes and refined profile. The former princely capital's palace sits on the shore of Gundolao Lake.
