Kitui is the capital of Kitui County, in the semi-arid eastern part of Kenya, several hours' drive east of Nairobi. The town lies among low hills and rocky outcrops, and on a map its streets form a compact centre around the market area, with roads leading out across a landscape of scrub and small farms.
The surrounding countryside is crossed by seasonal rivers, which are often dry, sandy channels for much of the year and fill quickly during the rains. These faint lines give the map a pattern of branching drainage, together with footpaths and tracks connecting scattered homesteads.
