Knokke-Heist stretches along the eastern end of the Belgian coast, from the edge of Zeebrugge's harbour almost to the Dutch border. On a map it is a long, narrow ribbon. A continuous seawall and promenade runs along the North Sea, with a band of dense resort streets behind it and flat polder farmland beyond.
The municipality joins several distinct places. Heist sits in the west near the port. Knokke has its centre and casino, whose gaming room is decorated with a well-known mural cycle by René Magritte. Het Zoute is known for its villas set along winding, leafy lanes. In the far east, the Zwin nature reserve brings the built coast to an end in tidal creeks and salt marsh.

Het Zoute lanes
Curving, tree-lined streets of large villas contrast sharply with the tighter blocks near the seafront. They form a softer, looser pattern inland.
The Zwin
At the eastern end, tidal creeks and salt marsh replace streets. The result is a delicate, branching texture right beside the Dutch border.
