Kommunar Map Poster & Print
Kommunar is in Gatchina district, south of St Petersburg, on the Izhora river. It grew up around a paper mill, which still operates, and the river was dammed to create a long pond that is now the town's main natural feature. From above, the water forms a soft, elongated shape running through the centre.
The town's layout mixes older areas near the mill with Soviet-era residential blocks and newer housing developments. Kommunar was granted town status only in the late twentieth century. Roads connect it to Gatchina, Pavlovsk and St Petersburg, and farmland and small villages surround it.

The mill complex sits next to the water and is the town's historic centre. Its industrial blocks form a distinct area on the map.
