Kościerzyna lies in the Kashubian Lake District of northern Poland, south-west of Gdańsk. The landscape was shaped by glaciers, and on the map the town sits among lakes of different sizes, with forest reaching close to its edges. The water gives the town an irregular outline, and some streets bend along the shorelines.
At the heart of town is a market square with a grid of streets around it, typical of Pomeranian towns. Railway lines converge here, and the old locomotive depot now houses a railway heritage museum with steam engines and rolling stock. Kościerzyna is also a centre of Kashubian culture, a regional identity with its own language.
