Kulim lies in southern Kedah, a short drive inland from Penang's mainland coast. The old town centre is a compact cluster of shophouse streets. The land around it was once dominated by rubber and oil palm estates and is now laid out as housing estates, highway links and the wide, regular plots of industrial development.
The town is home to the Kulim Hi-Tech Park, set up as Malaysia's first dedicated high-technology industrial park and now a base for semiconductor and electronics manufacturers. The Butterworth–Kulim Expressway connects the town to the port and to Penang Island across the strait, placing Kulim within the wider northern industrial corridor.

Butterworth–Kulim Expressway
This expressway runs west toward Butterworth and the Penang crossing. It gives the map a long, confident line that links the town to the coast.
