Kurseong sits in the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal, on a ridge overlooking the plains below. From above, the town is a thin, winding shape: streets and houses follow the contours of the slope, and Hill Cart Road loops along the ridge. The tracks of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway run through town, often right beside the road.
The name is often translated as the land of white orchids. Kurseong is surrounded by tea estates, including some of the best-known Darjeeling gardens, and its schools have long drawn students from across the region. The railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, gives the town a distinctive rhythm, with small trains passing through the bazaar.
