La Calera sits in the Aconcagua valley in the Valparaíso region, inland from the coast. From above, the town spreads across the valley floor beside the river, with hills rising on both sides. Streets form a mostly regular grid, and major roads and a railway line run through, following the valley.
The name La Calera refers to lime kilns, and the town has long been associated with the cement industry, which remains one of its defining activities. It also grew as a railway junction, linking the valley with the coast and routes to the north and south.
