La Carolina lies in the north of Jaén province, at the foot of the Sierra Morena. It was founded in the 1760s as the capital of the Nuevas Poblaciones, a colonisation project under Charles III led by Pablo de Olavide, which settled families from central Europe along the road between Madrid and Andalusia. The map still shows that plan clearly.
The historic centre is laid out as a regular grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks, with planned squares and wide avenues. It is very different from the winding medieval towns found elsewhere in Andalusia. Later neighbourhoods extend the grid in less strict forms, and a main highway passes close by, following the historic route through the mountains.
The area has a long mining history, especially in lead. The Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, one of the key battles of the Reconquista, was fought nearby in 1212. A La Carolina map poster shows an Enlightenment ideal of order set down in the Andalusian hills. It is a rare, precise piece of eighteenth-century town planning.

Formal squares
Open squares punctuate the grid at planned intervals. They give the composition clear focal points and reflect the town's eighteenth-century design.
Mountain route
The main road through the Sierra Morena passes the town on its way between Madrid and Andalusia. It gives the map a strong line running north to south.
