Lanyang is a town on Hainan, the large tropical island at the southern edge of China. It lies inland in the northwestern part of the island, away from the resort coast of the south. From above, it is a compact settlement with a small core of streets and roads branching out through the surrounding countryside.
The land around Lanyang is rural and green, with plantations, fields, small reservoirs and scattered villages. Roads curve with the terrain rather than following a grid, and the town's streets are shaped by the routes that meet there.
